Assessment of recovery of endovascular stenting in patients with vertebral and basilar artery stenosis by BEAM and transcranial doppler

چکیده
Objective: Vertebral and basilar artery stenosis is one of the main reasons causing posterior circulation ischemia. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of Brain Electrical Activity Mapping (BEAM) and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) in assessing the functional improvement of the vertebral basilar artery stenosis after endovascular stenting. Methods: Forty patients with vertebral and basilar artery stenosis treated with endovascular stenting and forty normal healthy controls between November 2010 and November 2011 were included in this study. Patients were evaluated with BEAM and TCD preoperatively and 6-months postoperatively. BEAM and TCD results of normal controls were also collected. Results: The function improvement of patients were significantly detected by using brain electrical activity mapping and transcranial doppler. Conclusion: Our findings showed that brain electrical activity mapping and transcranial doppler combined with digital subtraction angiography are valuable in the assessment of the function improvement of the vertebral basilar artery stenosis patients after endovascular stenting.

Carotid angioplasty and stenting in a patient with high grade stenosis of Internal Carotid Artery associated with both vertebral arteries and contralateral carotid occlusion
Severe internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis is a common cause of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in middle-aged patients. Contralateral carotid occlusion (CCO) in patients with severe ICA stenosis is associated with high risk of CVA. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is associated with more complications in patients with CCO than those without CCO. In this study, we present the case of a 61-year-ol...
متن کاملCombined external counterpulsation and endovascular stenting treatment for symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis: two case reports
Symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery (VBA) stenosis has a poor prognosis. Intravascular stents provide a new therapeutic approach, but the long-term outcome of stenting compared with medical outcome is controversial. External counterpulsation (ECP) is a noninvasive method to improve perfusion of vital organs. We report two cases of this combination with ECP treatment in addition to receiving endo...

Background: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has recently been recommended as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) by some clinicians. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the success rate and in-hospital and 30-day adverse events in our first experiences in Iran for CAS with protection devices, to document our results and guide further use of CAS. Methods: From December 2...

PURPOSE To describe the results and efficacy of stent treatment in patients with carotid stenosis who had aborted carotid endarterectomy procedures due to the appearance of severe electroencephalographic (EEG) alterations. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted of 18 patients (11 men; mean age 72 years, range 62-84) with symptomatic high-grade carotid artery stenoses (> or = 70%) who exp...
